Personal Data on Millions of Veterans Stolen
WASHINGTON (May 22, 2006) – The Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. is alerting all members that computer records with personal information on millions of veterans were stolen earlier this month from the home of a data analyst who works for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

In conference calls today with veterans’ service organizations and with members of the national news media, VA Secretary Jim Nicholson admitted that up to 26.5 million names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth and, in some cases, home addresses, disability ratings and spousal information were stolen during what appeared to be a random burglary.

We're thowing away hundreds of dollars every month!
VFW Members, We need your help with a big addressing problem! Hundreds of our members have failed to notify the VFW of the "new" 911 compliant address changes that were mandated by the U.S. Postal Service a few years ago. In January 2003 the USPS began returning these incorrectly addressed items back to us. Each mailing of VFW News yields hundreds of undeliverable newpapers. Each piece returned costs us seventy cents!

Those of you with addresses that read something like "RR 2, Box 999" need to let the VFW know your new "911 compliant" address or you might not be receiving any mail from us in the future. Anyone can help. Individuals can update their own address as can Post Quartermasters who are on the ball at the following National Member Information Change Page.
